Henry Hank Mayes, a Temple resident, is making the unthinkable possible.
He earned his associate’s degree at the age of 60 and is presently pursuing his teaching certification at A&M Central Texas.
Given the serious teacher shortage, Hank stated that he is doing what previous instructors did for him.
“My family life wasn’t great while I was growing up, “Hank stated. “I had a stepfather who was fairly cruel to all the kids… school was my safe haven; I felt comfortable there, and the instructors took me under their wing and helped nurture me.”
According to the Economic Policy Institute, by 2025, the country will have around 110,000 fewer teachers than it need.
That is why Hank wishes to help the next generation.
“There is a scarcity, and I know that because I have grandkids in school,” Hank explained. “Like I said, I was raised by my teachers [and] coaches, and they have made me a wonderful impact today.”
Hank is a teacher-in-training at Killeen ISD.

In light of the severe absence of instruction, Hank stated that he is doing for himself what the other teachers did for him.
“My family life was not nice growing up,” Hank stated. “I had a stepfather who was quite nasty to all of the children… I felt comfortable at school since the professors took me under their wings and helped grow me.”

That is why Hank wishes to step forward to assist the younger generation.
“Lack, and I know I have grandkids in school,” Hank explained. “As I said, I was nurtured by my professors [and] coaches, and they had a wonderful influence on me today.”
Hank is a teacher-in-training at Killeen ISD.
“I don’t believe it’s ever too late to learn, and I believe you can learn at any age,” Hank added.
